We were delighted to recently accept the IWSC’s Old Vine Trophy on behalf of Estate Argyros, the well-deserved winners of the award.
The IWSC’s Old Vine Trophy is a celebration of producers who preserve and protect the uniqueness and importance of some of the world’s oldest vineyards. We’ve been working with Estate Argyros for over 10 years and have seen the interest in Santorini’s volcanic old vines grow steadily. The total absence of clay from the soil makes this a phylloxera-free island and, as a result, many of the vines are well over 100 years old, some even over 200 years old, all ungrafted.
Arid and dramatically windy, Santorini is a fascinating, and immensely challenging environment, to grow vines in, yet Matthew Argyros and his team have done a remarkable job. Very many congratulations to our friends in Santorini!
