Producers & Wines, England
We are really pleased that our reputation on the London on-trade encouraged Gusbourne Estate, "English Wine Producer of the Year 2013", to invite us to work with them last year. We have had a fruitful first year of cooperation, helping them to raise their profile and increase their distribution on the UK on-trade market, and arranging visits to their beautiful Kentish vineyards for many lucky customers. (No passports required!)
The wine estate was created and first planted in 2003 by Andrew Weeber on beautiful, warm and dry south-facing slopes in Kent, just a few miles from the coast. The 20 hectare vineyard, in production since 2007, was planted on a clay and sandy loam soil and a further 10 hectares have since been added in West Sussex. Grape varieties chosen are the holy trinity from Champagne: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. In many aspects, wine-making and viticulture follow the traditional processes of Champagne, but there are significant differences between Kent and Champagne and consequently there are as many subtle differences in the production as there are similarities between these two areas.
Andrew is now partially retired but remains very active promoting the estate and its wines, and the running of the estate is now in the hands of a charming team. They are young but already have great experience of wine making and grape growing in English conditions, with their recent success of two Gold Outstanding Medals awarded at the International Wine and Spirit Competition 2015, a testament to their uncompromising dedication to making the very best wines possible.
